Advice on Internships:

Fleming notes that today, every company utilizes interns, however, this does not mean that experience overrides skill. She states that backgrounds in writing and communication defeat any experience gained from internships because every person must have some knowledgeable foundation. Fleming believes that portfolios, samples and any other tangible form of experience show individual ability best.

My two cents: There is no doubt about it, one needs specialized skill to be successful in any job field. However, internships are extremely important these days. If you and an opponent are competing for a job, the one with the most experience will win. Today's world is all about NETWORKING, and networking is done through previous positions and internships. Internships give you experience that learning out of a textbook simply cannot provide. Tip: When looking for an internship do not turn away if the position is not exactly related to what you want to do. Stay in the same field of course, but go after a variety of internships so that you can mentally narrow down a future career.

Advice for Aspiring Public Relations Professionals:

“Do what you love, but if your path changes because of life happenings, that is okay too.”  Fleming said that every public relations professional must learn to relax and constantly adapt to changes in the work atmosphere.  In public relations, audiences, management, technology and job demands all change on a daily basis; therefore adaptation is a key skill.

My two cents: The need to constantly adapt doesn't just apply to public relations, it applies to every aspect of life. Especially in our very busy world, people are constantly on the go and switching between tasks, ideas, and mentalities. If change is not something you deal with well, than public relations may not be for you. Public relations is hard work and like any job, unless you love what you are doing you may need to reevaluate your future career. Specifically, public relations requires 1:1 communication with a variety of people which is why adaptation is so important.
