Who is Cheryl Fleming?: Cheryl Fleming is a public relations professional that works as Director of Communications and Marketing at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware. Sanford High School resides as one of the most desirable private schools in the state of Delaware. Fleming utilizes her public relations skills daily as she works with students, faculty and outside media to create an image for this local school. Background and Education: Fleming attended Salisbury University in Maryland and received her B.A. degree in Communications. Fleming expressed an interest in public relations early on, but she debated on which aspect of communications to pursue. Originally, Fleming studied speech therapy and television broadcasting, but her path led her to public relations. Fleming graduated in 1980 and immediately received multiple job offers within the range of public relations. In 2005, she landed a job at Sanford High School where she currently plays an important role as the head of communications. Current Work at Sanford: Budget limitations and task responsibilities vary between public relations in a school versus public relations in a business or firm. With a smaller school budget, Fleming works with limited money, resources and fewer public relations staff members. At Sanford, Fleming promotes both internal and external communications. She works with the community to maintain the current audience while attracting a new audience to attend the school. Other tasks include sending out newsletters, writing annual reports, and updating social media with the school’s current events. Occasionally, Fleming works with the press in times of crisis management and when pitching a newsworthy story.
